Thankfully, it is time to think about gardening again! We are looking for planters, weeders, harvesters, mulchers, waterers to keep the garden growing and thriving thru the spring, into the summer and early fall months.  If you would like to focus on a particular vegetable or fruit, that is also a way to help.  The garden is a key element of how we put our faith into action Screen Shot 2019-03-30 at 14.42.14and engage in the mission of God at St. John’s and in the town of Vernon; it takes a village to make it go and grow. Please see Letty or Virginia if you are able to help in ANY way this coming season.

Spring Gift Card Sale – Order forms are available in the Narthex. It will start Sunday March 31st. The last date to turn in orders is April 21st (Easter). Delivery is April 28th and May 5th in time for Mother’s Day.  Thanks, Bill Francis

As our Stewardship season nears the end, we are close to matching the 2018 pledge totals.  We have received 96 pledges, including five new pledges, for approximately $220,000.  There are still a handful of parishioners who pledged in 2018 and are still active from whom we have not received a pledge this year.  As we have heard over the past weeks, a pledge is not one of your household bills, it is the outward manifestation of God’s blessings we all have.  We will complete the pledge ingathering this coming Sunday, March 31, so please mail or bring in a pledge card this week if we have not received yours yet.  St. John’s is blessed with abundance — abundance of Community, abundance of energy, and, best of all— abundance of God’s Love. Kevin Fenner, Treasurer

On Saturday, April 27th, at 5:30 pm we will have a Pot Luck International night. You are invited to come with your favorite dish that has an International twist or flavor. Bring the family, bring a friend! Please sign up in the Narthex or by emailing stjohnsvernonct@gmail.com.

Tuesday, May 7th at 6:30 pm, St. John’s will host a regional Confirmation Celebration, at which at least five parishes will be represented. St. John’s has seven confirmands and several adults to be received. The Rt. Rev. Dr. Laura J. Ahrens will be the Celebrant and Preacher. The Palmer Family will sing. The ECW will host a reception. If you are an adult and would like to be officially received into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church, please see Virginia. And I hope that you will come and support our young people on this leg of their faith journey.

Sunday, June 9th will be the last day of Church School.  Our children and youth will participate in the worship service, and there will be an All Parish Picnic Luncheon in the Lower Parish Hall and on the Lawn right after the 10 am worship service.

Relay for Life SW/Vernon is celebrating its 25th Anniversary on June 7-8th.  On April 14 we will have our annual bake sale to benefit our relay team efforts. We need both bakers and buyers to make the bale sale a success!!   St Johns Spirit Walkers team will be selling quilt raffle tickets in the middle of May.   Be sure you purchase several so you can be the proud owner of a Cheryl Abbott original!!!   Also, we will be selling and decorating Luminaria on May 19th at coffee hour for the very special ceremony on the Friday evening of the event, more info to follow.  Your prayers, donations, laps on the track etc. all make a difference in the lives those families fighting cancer.  If you’d like more information on how you can be a supporter of the team’s 9th year participating, contact Melissa Fenner, Alfreda Barber, Diane Dalo, or Erica Feenstra.

A note from Virginia:

I am taking a three month sabbatical this summer to which I am adding two weeks of vacation. I am taking off the week of May 12th after worship that Sunday to clean the basement and garage of the Rectory (All those boxes that we brought 10 years ago from Pomfret need to be managed right out the door!). I will be around for clergy conference May 20-21, do a summer Epistle and various office chores with Margaret on May 22-23, and conduct a parish wedding on Memorial Day weekend. I will be the Celebrant and Preacher on Memorial Day Sunday with ONE UNITED service at 9 am. After that weekend, I will be gone the rest of the summer, returning for treatment as usual every 4 weeks. Thanks entirely to your generosity of last June, Tom and I will be traveling in July. We are going to Nova Scotia with my sister Amy and her husband Dave. And we are taking a Civil Rights tour of the South, visiting Monticello in Charlottesville, VA, Montgomery and Selma AL, and Memphis, TN. For most of the rest of the time we will be in Rhode Island where I hope/intend to read, knit and walk LOTS and to spend time with our family. I will be back on September 8th.  Tom and I will host the All Parish Open House on September 29th.
I am deeply grateful and St. John’s is completely blessed that Ben Brockman is able to cover in my absence. He will do the Sunday work and meet Pastoral needs as they arise. He will keep me in the loop should any urgencies arise.
In May I will publish a schedule for dates when Lester Fund claims will be reviewed and processed.
Blessings, Virginia
